Athens, Greece – The main seismologist of the Greek government says the frequency of earthquakes Affecting Santorini and the nearby islands has been reduced in recent days, but that the perspective of continuous tremors in the coming weeks remains uncertain.
“Unfortunately, for now, we must wait. These seismic sequences do not end quickly. They continue their own timeline, ”Seismologist Papazachos Costas to ERT state radio said on Monday.
“With luck, this particular sequence will surprise us positively and will be resolved sooner rather than later,” he said.
An emergency state has been declared in Santorini And the nearby islands of iOS, Amorgos and Anafi after a swarm of submarine earthquakes this month, sometimes they feel every few minutes. Thousands of residents and workers to move to the Greek continent.
The schools on the islands remain closed for the third week, while security services have established rescue equipment and supporting energy generators as part of caution measures.
The Government announced on Monday that an emergency port installation in Santorini was being established in case of large -scale evacuation.
Papazachos, a professor of geophysics at the University of Tesón de Tesón, currently serves as a representative of two emergency committees that include government scientists and officials, military and emergency services.
He said that Santorini, a volcanic island formed by catastrophic eruptions, did not face danger of its inactive volcano, but pointed out that the magma was affecting the tremors.
“The root cause of the activity is the interaction of tectonic and magmatic processes,” he said. “That does not mean that the molten material, the magma, will break 8 kilometers (5 miles) of bark and reach the surface, causing a new volcanic eruption.”
The scientists were developing a clearer image after collecting data from multiple sensors, he said.
“We are monitoring not only seismographs, but also many other systems that track soil deformation, gas emissions and satellite data,” he said. “At this time, I can honestly say that we do not have a definitive forecast, since it is too early to evaluate the light current decalciation of the seismic activity. We have found many surprises. “
The earthquakes of up to magnitude 5.1 were recorded on Monday in the Submarine area bordered by the four islands under an emergency.
